AGE DEFENSE
Looking good and maintaining a youthful appearance is the mantra of today’s society and youthful means a healthy lifestyle, healthy diet and a well cared for skin. Skin Aging caused by environmental and other external influences and in fact often by the very skincare we use has more influence on the aging process then our genetic disposition.
Some of the major causes of premature aging are: Excessive unprotected exposure to the sun, free radicals, chemical ingredients, fragrance and colorants used in skincare, stress, hormonal imbalances and allergies. The visible signs of aging cannot be fully avoided, but can be dramatically minimized. The key is to do it as gently as possible. As far as the skin is concerned there are two types of aging – intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic aging involves the inevitable; as we grow older, our skin naturally becomes thinner and drier. A Diminishing production of collagen makes the skin less elastic. What used to bounce back begins to sag and deep wrinkles may begin appearing. The rate of these events is genetically determined for each person; the process first becomes noticeable between the ages of 30 and 35. Extrinsic aging results from exposure to the environment. Extrinsic aging is the critical element in determining who looks older or younger than their biological age. Exposure to sunlight is a key contributor to extrinsic aging. Photo aging results when elastin and collagen breakdown occurs causing fine lines and wrinkles to intensify. Photo aging also causes pigment changes resulting in the development of age spots (sun-induced freckles) and uneven skin tone. Spider veins and dilated capillaries are another sign of a photo aged skin. Lifestyle choices also have an impact on extrinsic aging.
Free Radicals: The free radical theory is the most widely accepted theory of aging. On the cellular level, they are responsible for severe damage, destroying the cell membrane, DNA, RNA, Collagen and Elastin structures. We need the anti-oxidants to scoop up the free radicals before they can damage the cells. The anti oxidants must be non toxic otherwise they will damage the skin. It is also essential the anti oxidant has to get to the site where protection is needed.
Dr Baumann MultiActive Liposome E +C contains high concentrations of anti Free Radical Vitamin E ,C and A. The Liposomes present in the products transfer essential ingredients to defend the skin from further free radical damage and will repair damaged cell membranes so that the cells remain intact and healthy.
Hormones: Receptor sites for hormones cannot function when the cell looses fluidity and this speeds up the aging process. All Dr Baumann MultiActive Liposomes contain high concentrations of Hyaluronic acid and Urea that will help to re-hydrate the cell membranes allowing essential nutrients to pass into the cells, waste products to leave the cells so that the functions that ensure a youthful healthy skin can be carried out successfully.
Stress: Stress causes a number of chemical reactions in the body. It affects the minerals in our body such as iron and copper creating free radicals. These free radicals attack our cell membranes and further accelerate the aging process. When sugar molecules attach themselves to your Collagen fibres they trigger a series of spontaneous chemical reactions. These reactions culminate in gradual and irreversible cross links between adjoining collagen molecules and this cross linking leads to a loss of elasticity and to lines and wrinkles on the skin. Try Yoga, or meditation in order to build on your inner strengths and to find your inner quiet place.
Proteins: A lack of proteins is noticeable in the face where the features become soft and less defined. If you do not receive sufficient protein the body is forced to feed on itself and this causes both a tissue and muscle breakdown and a slack appearance to the skin. This simple fact of life can change the way you look beginning with your next meal.
Focus on Water: The fountain of youth is definitely Water. Forever young means drink water, drink water and drink water. If you do not drink water your organs and cells cannot function. How can your skin be soft and plumped up if you don’t drink the elixir of life? Without adequate water you cannot metabolize fat, nor can your body nor can your body flush wastes from the cells. A dehydrated body encourages aging so treat yourself to delicious tasting spring water it’s the best deal.

Investing in People
We all tend to look back at the previous year and try to find the things that did not work well for us in business as well as our personal lives. Starting each new year is a very important time for our businesses, because it sets the rhythm for the rest of the year and the pase we will be taking on. One of the things that most businesses overlook is the people that work for them and the potential in them. So today I will be talking about how important it is to invest in the people that work for you.
For every business the prime resource – the working capital – is people. Money matters, but the human beings who work there matter even more. If you want to take a pragmatic view of people, regard them as an investment. Every employee costs money to acquire and also to maintain and they should provide a return on that outlay. The more you invest in them the more their value increase as they become more effective in their jobs and capable of taking on greater responsibility.
So how can you as owner or manager contribute to effective training of your staff?
Determine the standards of performance required for each of the positions/jobs in your business.
Analyze the competences (knowledge and skills) relevant to the achievement of these standards.
Agree with these individuals concerned what these standards and competences are.
Review with these individuals their performance so that an agreement can be reached on any gaps to be filled between what they can do and what they should be able to do.
Every time you give someone an instruction treat it as a training opportunity. Get individuals to tell you how they would do the job. This way you can help them to work out the best way for themselves, progressively giving them less guidance so that they learn to stand on their own feet.
Allow for the learning curve. Don’t expect to much, but do require your staff to improve at a pace which matches their natural aptitudes. Only bear down hard on people if they are clearly not trying and have no excuse.
Always train and develop by example. Give people the opportunity to learn from the way you do things. Remember that managers learn best how to manage by managing under a good manager. And this principle applies equally well to other categories of job holders.
Remember that the prime responsibility for training and developing your staff rests with you and your results depend on their competence.
Plan the training for your staff in accordance with a regular review of their training needs.
Remember to use a variety of training techniques such as job instruction, assignments, coaching, and guided reading.
As written in “The Practice of Management” – Development is always self-development. Nothing could be more absurd that for the enterprise to assume responsibility for the development of a man. The responsibility rests with the individual, his abilities, his efforts …Every manager in a business has the opportunity to encourage self-development or to stifle it, to direct it or to misdirect it. he should be specifically assigned the responsibility for helping all men working with him to focus, direct and apply their self-development efforts productively. And every company can provide systematic development changes to its manager.
This year Dr Baumann South Africa as a company will be offering educational seminars relevant to the skin and the products we use in our Skinology Seminars as well as new innovating ideas on business in our Millionaire Seminars. This will be just one of the ways we will be trying to assist you and your staff in your business ventures for new year.

Barriers To Communication
In today’s world we are all so connected through websites, chat-sites, cellphones etc, and yet we are all so disconnected. More and more people recognize the need to communicate but find it difficult. We are like hedgehogs that want to get together, but our prickles keep us apart. Words may sound or look precise, but they are not. All sorts of barriers exist between the communicator and the receiver. Unless these barriers are overcome the message will be distorted or will not get through.
We like to hear what we want to hear. What we understand when someone speaks to us is largely based on our own experience and background. Instead of hearing what people have told us, we hear what our minds tell us they have said.
We tend to ignore or reject communications that conflict with our own beliefs. If they are not rejected, some way is found of twisting and shaping their meaning to fit our preconceptions. When a message is inconsistent with existing beliefs, the receiver rejects its validity, avoids further exposure to it, easily forgets it and, in his memory, distorts what he has heard.
It is difficult to separate what we hear from our feelings about the person who says it. Non-existent motives may be ascribed to the communicator. If we like someone we are more likely to accept what he says – whether it is right or wrong – than if we dislike him.
Words mean different things to different people. Essentially, language is a method of using symbols to represent facts and feelings. Strictly speaking, we can’t convey meaning, all we can do is to convey words. Do not assume that because something has a certain meaning to you, it will convey the same meaning to someone else.
Our emotions colour our ability to convey or to receive the true message. When we are insecure or worried, what we hear seems more threatening that when we are secure and at peace with the world. When we are angry or depressed, we tend to reject what might otherwise seem like reasonable requests or good ideas. During heated argument, many things that are said may not be understood or may be badly distorted.
These are just some of the barriers we face during communication. So how do we overcome these barriers?
Well we have to adjust to the world of the receiver. Try to predict the impact of what you are going to say on the receiver’s feelings and attitudes. Tailor the message to fit the receiver’s vocabulary, interests and values. Be aware of how the information might be misinterpreted because of prejudices, the influence of others and the tendency of people to reject what they do not want to hear.
Another good method is using feedback. Ensure that you get a message back from the receiver which tells you how much has been understood.
Use face-to-face communication. Whenever possible talk to people rather than write to them. That is how you can get feedback. You can adjust or change your message according to reactions. You can also deliver it in a more human and understanding way, this can help to overcome prejudices. Verbal criticism can often be given in a more constructive manner than written reproof which always seems to be harsher.
Let us all make our new years resolution to start to try and communicate better with our husbands, friends, work colleagues and bosses. This way we might just be a bit closer to a society that is in harmony.

Elevate Magazine: Why We Love Liposomes
How Dr. Baummann Cosmetics can change the look of your skin by harnessing the power of nature.
BY TONI-MARIE IPPOLITO
There are many skin care brands that claim to be “all-natural”, “organic” and “anti-aging.” It can be difficult to determine which brands are authentic in their claims, which is why we’ve become such big fans of Dr. Baummann Cosmetics.
The brainchild of German doctors, Dr. Ernst W. Henrich (a naturopath) and Dr. Thomas Baummann (a cosmetic chemist and dermatologist), Dr. Baumann Cosmetics was created to fill a need that seemed to be missing from the market: skincare free of chemicals and unnatural substances that are harmful to the skin.
Horrified by the poor results he was seeing in the condition of women’s skin in their 20s, Dr. Baummann, along with Dr. Henrich, spent 22 years sourcing ingredients that would perfectly match the skin. Once this was achieved, the philosophy behind Dr. Baummann Cosmetics became clear: anything not a natural part of the skin must be avoided. To put it simply, if you were going to receive a kidney transplant, a doctor wouldn’t use another organ to replace it, because the body would instantly reject it.
To maintain this level of quality, Dr. Baummann Cosmetics follows a strict mandate for all products to meet the requirements under its Bionome standard. “Bionome is actually defined in a German dictionary as heart of life…the science and the laws of life,” says Ron Franks, president of Dr. Baummann Cosmetics Canada. “For us, it means a product is free of all mineral oils, oxygen, fragrance, colourants, chemical sunscreens, and free of chemical preservatives such as parabens. It is therefore skin-friendly and animal-friendly.”
This philosophy is applied to all three of the lines, which include Dr. Baummann (the most popular line), SkinIDent (a more exclusive line) and BeauCaire (a smaller, organic line geared to the younger market). All three lines (which extend to body washes, shampoo and makeup) use different ingredients and natural oils, like coconut, macadamia or jojoba, and they all include a star ingredient: liposomes. According to Franks, liposomes contain the same composition as human skin cells and act as “transporters”, carrying ingredients deep beneath the skin’s layers in order to treat it from the lowest level, where new skin is produced. “Liposomes take the good ingredients, like vitamins, down to the lower layers of the skin,” Franks explains. “When you treat the skin, you really want to treat it from the lowest level, from the dermis, where it’s actually produced so that your skin keeps producing new healthy skin and it moves up through the layers, eventually exfoliating off your skin.”
“STRANGERS HAVE STOPPED ME IN THE STREET AND GROCERY STORE TO ASK ME WHAT I USE ON MY SKIN.” - Andra Campitelli, ND, JP Campitelli Health Centre, Toronto
According to Franks, with regular use, all of the products under the Dr. Baummann Cosmetics umbrella are guaranteed to improve the health of your skin within three to five weeks. “After the first week of using Dr. Baummann, my skin was glowing, not over-hydrated, and healthy,” says Andra Campitelli, ND, a naturopathic doctor from the JC Campitelli Health Centre in Toronto. “Strangers have stopped me in the street and the grocery store to ask me what I use on my skin. I recommend Dr. Baummann exclusively in my practice, and to my family, because there really just isn’t another effective, natural product that can give the same results.”
“We’re here to make a difference,” says Franks. “Ten years ago you wouldn’t find an organic section in the supermarket. Today you don’t find a supermarket without one. The same sort of thing is starting to happen in the cosmetic industry. And people are going to be thinking, ‘hang on, what’s in here? Is this healthy? Is it safe?’”
HERE ARE SOME OF THE STARS OF THE DR. BAUMMANN FLAGSHIP LINE.
1. Cleansing Milk A mild emulsion free of mineral oil, which gently cleanses without drying.
2. Sensitive cream A nourishing cream for sensitive skin.
3. Liposome MultiActive E & C Containing high concentrations of vitamins E + C, it protects the skin from environmental stressors.
4. Solarium Liposome The skin is protected and nourished, and nutrients are delivered to the skin by the liposomes.
5. Aloe Vera Mask This gel based mask has cooling, calming ingredients.

Fallon’s Choice: Peeling Mild

I really do believe in locking myself in the bathroom, once a week, for a soak, scrub and mask for my sanity, and the wellbeing of the ones I love. Like every woman out there, I do get grumpy, irritated, tired, over worked, over emotional, and the list goes on and on. Every working-mom-woman deserves a time out from work, dogs, cooking, and even our adorable children (even though we love them very much).
Many people seek happiness from outside sources, even me, especially when it comes to shopping. Feeling that things like money, a better job, and a better relationship will make you happy. The secret is, to make “you” happy and truly look after yourself.
To truly feel happier and more empowered I will share on of my secret pep-me-up products!
The Peeling Mild is a gentle exfoliator to polish away all the dead cell build-up, pollution and stress of the week. Not only does it prevent blackheads and impurities, it also improved the effectiveness of skincare products! This product is so soft and creamy, but yet has the perfect amount of granules to ensure a very thorough exfoliation. There is no need to scrub your face, to get rid of the week, let the peel do the work! It feels like a million little minute pebbles polishing the face to a perfect shine! Afterwards, when I apply the rest of my ampoules and creams, my skin soaks it up in seconds, leaving my skin looking like a month-long-holiday at the spa! A cheat, I know, but a busy woman’s got to do what a busy wonan’s go to do! Come on, try it!

Dr. Baumann goes PINK
The Pink Ribbon has become the international symbol for breast cancer awareness. It has helped to raise consumer consciousness about the issues of breast Cancer all over the world and to send a pink message of hope and support to cancer sufferers and survivors. It is also a reminder for the world to keep working on a cure for this devastating disease. Breast Cancer affects not only the women who have it, but their families as well.
Dr Baumann cosmetics have been carrying the flag for safe skincare and healthy living for over 20 years in Europe, and over the past two years in North America educating women about the need for safe, healthy skincare and recommending that women and their families actively avoid cosmetic ingredients that may cause breast cancer, other forms of cancer or sin diseases.
Many women pay little attention to the connection between skincare and breast cancer or the general hormonal disturbances that can result from certain ingredients present in ones beauty products. We believe that education is everything and strive to inform our customers and the consumers at large about what they should be looking out for to ensure that they and their families keep skin safe.
Shocking Information
- Chemicals from deodorants and other cosmetics can build up in the body. British researchers amongst others have found traces of chemicals called parabens in tissue taken from women with breast cancer. Writing in the the Journal of Applied Toxicology they say that they found traces of parabens in every sample.
- Their tests suggested that chemicals had seeped into the tissue after having been applied to the skin – Dr Phillipa Darbre says that this demonstrates that if people are exposed to these chemicals, then the chemicals will accumulate in their bodies. As a result of this research and other scientists worldwide have called for the use of Parabens in cosmetic products to be re- considered.
- Dr Darbre further said that there may be good reason for people to be concerned about the findings “Their detection in human breast tumors is of concern since parabens have been shown to be able to mimic the action of the female hormone oestrogen, “ she said. “Oestrogen can drive the growth of human breast tumors. It would therefore seem especially prudent to consider whether parabens should continue to be used in such a wide range of cosmetics applied to the breast area including deodorants.”
- The toxicity problems with parabens have been known for some time as can be easily seen from this transcript from http://website.lineone.net/~mwarhurst/parabens.html. If you would like more in depth factual information on the toxic effects of many common chemicals this is a very good site to visit.
- In late 1998 John Sumpter’s group at Brunel University, UK, published a paper identifying parabens as oestrogen mimics (Routledge et al., 1998).
- The authors’ state: “Given their use in a wide range of commercially available topical preparations, it is suggested that the safety in use of these chemicals should be reassessed, with particular attention being paid to estimation of the actual levels of systemic exposure of humans exposed to these chemicals.
- The acquisition of such data is a prerequisite to the derivation of reliable estimates of the possible human risk of exposure to parabens.”
What should we avoid?
Well, for a start, all products that contain chemical preservatives such as parabens.
What are Parabens?
- Parabens are a group of compounds widely used as anti-microbial preservatives in food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetic products, including underarm deodorants.
- Parabens are absorbed through intact skin and from the gastrointestinal tract and blood. Measurable concentrations of six different parabens have been identified in biopsy samples from breast tumours.
- The particular parabens were found in relative concentrations that closely parallel their use in the synthesis of cosmetic products. Parabens have also been found in almost all urine samples examined State of the Evidence 2008. The presence of the parabens can cause an imbalance of the Endocrine system.

Clean Air
The people have a right to clean air, pure water, and to the preservation of the natural, scenic, historic and aesthetic values of the environment.
Every one of you sitting here today is carrying at least 500 measurable chemicals in your body that were never in anybody’s body before the 1920s… We have dusted the globe with man-made chemicals that can undermine the development of the brain and behavior, and the endocrine, immune and reproductive systems, vital systems that assure perpetuity… Everyone is exposed. You are not exposed to one chemical at a time, but a complex mixture of chemicals that changes day by day, hour by hour, depending on where you are and the environment you are in… In the United States alone it is estimated that over 72,000 different chemicals are used regularly. Two thousand five hundred new chemicals are introduced annually—and of these, only 15 are partially tested for their safety. Not one of the chemicals in use today has been adequately tested for these intergenerational effects that are initiated in the womb. -Theo Colburn, Speech at the State of the Word Forum, San Francisco, 3 Oct 96
It is safe to say that we do not always know what is good for us, as we believe the manufacturers and brand labels that what they put into your jar is safe and healthy. that the ingredients will not harm, pollute or irritate our skins. why do we feel the need to be blind when it comes to our health and that of our families health. we continue to pollute our skins with mineral oils, fragrances, chemical dyes, minerals not endemic to the skin and we wonder why we see no results or the results we expect to see.
Our environment, the world in which we live and work, is a mirror of our attitudes and expectations. The environment, after all, is where we all meet, where we all where we all have a mutual interest. It is one thing that all of us share. It is not only a mirror of ourselves, but a focusing lens on what we can become.
When we heal the earth, we heal ourselves. by understanding what is in your jar of skincare we are able to ensure that we cleanse our skins correctly and remove any pollution by using safe pure plant oils instead of mineral oils we start to see our skins blossom with summer radiance, even clear skin textures and tones, skin that is free and able to function in its optimal balance, to show its and your true authentic beauty.
You know that the air and water are being polluted, as is everything we touch and live with, and we go on corrupting the nature that we need. We don’t realize we have a commitment to God to take care of nature. To cut down a tree, to waste water when there is so much lack of it, to let buses poison our atmosphere with those noxious fumes from their exhausts, to burn rubbish haphazardly – all that concerns our alliance with God. -Oscar Romero (1917-1980), The Violence of Love, March 11, 1979
